Infectious Diseases

Roadblock:

Immunization is one of the most cost-effective health interventions currently available. Nevertheless, there is an urgent need to expand the set of safe and effective solutions beyond that of conventional vaccines and drugs that can be used in resource-limited settings to protect against infectious disease.

Roadblock:

Vaccines have been a cornerstone of global health campaigns to provide protection against infectious diseases. However, discovery of new vaccines currently relies on a long and costly process of trial and error, and this approach has an uneven record of success. The proliferation of novel antigens, adjuvants, and formulations require new methods to more reliably select those entities that will elicit protective immune responses in humans.

Roadblock:

Immunization is one of the most cost-effective health interventions currently available.  However, effective vaccines do not yet exist for a number of infectious diseases prevalent in the developing world.  In some instances vaccines have been developed, but are suboptimal because they are not highly effective in individuals most at risk of death or disability from the targeted disease.  In addition, barriers, such as cost and delivery challenges, can prevent their widespread utilization in resource-limited settings.
