A Systems Solution to Postpartum Hemorrhage: Building and Expanding on ESM-UBT Market Readiness and a Successful High Quality Holistic PPH Emergency Care Program

Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Products that address PPH are urgently needed in LMICs, however, developing a sustainable business plan around a low margin and low volume product is challenging. With this award, CMHI will validate a viable business plan for critical PPH commodities in Kenya. The Every Second Matters for Mothers and Babies - Uterine Balloon Tamponade™ (ESM-UBT) is an ultra-low cost (FDA approved) UBT package, designed to arrest uncontrolled PPH after conventional methods fail. The approach is based on a PPH Emergency Care Kit and training package (“the PPH bundle”). The PPH bundle offers a more integrated, comprehensive, and organized approach to PPH management that addresses common challenges in implementation related to delays in identification of PPH, delays in intervention as well as the disorganized use of PPH interventions.
